step 1: pick a current event topic that connects to a historical theme or event covered in the textbook.

step 2: Conduct research into news articles on the chosen current event topic. Pick out a couple of the best articles that highlight the current problem. (you choose an appropriate topic that can be linked to the book)

Step 3:  Review and gather historical evidence that connects to the key issues you pinpointed from step 2, from the following sources: textbook and primary sources at back of chapters.

Step 4: Write the essay, clearly stating how historical events help illuminate and understand a contemporary problem, issue or debate. Back up your argument with concrete evidence gathered in step 3, INCLUDING AT LEAST ONE PRIMARY SOURCE. The logic of your argument and the deployment of multiple forms of evidence are key to doing this step well.
