For your capstone project, you will complete a six-page research paper exploring the characteristic symptoms, prevalence rate, causal factors, and treatment of a specific DSM-5 disorder. Included in your paper will be a review of how to integrate both recovery-oriented and Christian principles into treatment for the selected disorder. You may select any disorder within the DSM-5 that has not been covered in a previous assignment (i.e., either of the diagnostic papers). You are advised to pick a disorder that has a solid body of literature so as to write a detailed paper.
Overall, the paper will consist of the following sections:
(1) Introduction: the student should clearly outline the diagnosis that will be reviewed, as well as what he or she will accomplish in the paper.
(2) Characteristic Symptoms/Prevalence Rate/Causal Factors (e.g., biological, cultural, social, environmental): The DSM-5 symptoms should be thoroughly covered; the most current prevalence rates are explored, including those for gender, age, and socioeconomic status; biological, cultural, social, and environmental causes of the disorder should be explored.
(3) Treatment Approaches: At least three treatment approaches are described, including psychotherapeutic and psychotropic options that have empirical support within the literature. Be sure to cite your sources (please paraphrase rather than using direct quotations to demonstrate comprehension) when discussing the research evidence for the treatment approaches that you are suggesting. Your approaches need to be based on effectiveness research within the field.
(4) Recovery-oriented principles: At least three recovery-oriented principles are included that will help clients cope with the DSM-5 diagnosis. Specifically, share about your ideas on how you could potentially utilize three recovery-oriented principles to enhance the treatment of someone with your chosen disorder.
(5) Christian principles: Discuss how you would go about inquiring whether faith integration was of interest to the client. Then, in a case when the client expressed an interest in integrating their faith into treatment, discuss two ways that you could do this that would be consistent with the therapy modality that you selected.
(6) Research Literacy/APA style/Formatting: At least 8 academic references (i.e., textbooks, journal articles) are used beyond the textbook, none of which are websites (see note below); APA style/formatting is used consistently throughout the article with minimal to no errors; the Title page is in APA style; articles are cited appropriately in APA style; spelling, grammar, and punctuation are congruent with APA style; the Reference page is consistent with APA style; the paper is at least six pages, above and beyond the Title, Abstract, and References pages.
***NOTE: Given the current circumstances due to COVID and challenges with finding hard-copy resources, I will permit students to use up to 3 reputable web-based sources to gather information for this paper. Eight (8) total sources are required for this paper; thus, at least 5 resources must be peer-reviewed journal articles that you may find as electronic sources on PsycInfo (or other databases) from the CBU library website.
For the web-based sources that you use, please do your best to ensure that the web source is a legitimate resource. Please DO NOT use Wikipedia. This is not a primary source and is prone to error. Please go to primary web-sources instead. In other words, find sites that compile research data and provide legitimate citations.
Heres a few reputable mental health resources. These links may not provide the exact information youre looking for, but it will be a good start in knowing the types of national, state, nonprofit, or university programs that track statistics and causes of mental disorders.
