ESSAY TOPIC:

Write an essay describing the process of your own socialization when you were growing up.

How did the structure & socio-economic background of your family play a role in shaping who you are?
How did it shape your values, norms, beliefs, opportunities (this is an important one) and affect your career choice?

Families’ social factors that often have an influence:
family type (ex: intact family, single parent)
family’s cultural background and/or religion
parent(s’) income
parent(s’) level of education
parent’s work situation (profession, work schedule, stress)
gender socialization
parenting style (ex: authoritarian)
type of couple (ex: dual career type)
parents’ conflict, separation or divorce
siblings, grand-parents or other significant persons

If ever you don’t have enough to write with the question above (I would be very surprised), you can also discuss how 1 other agent of socialization had an influence as well on your up-bringing. The other agents are peers, media, government, school, religion, work

In your essay,

a) You must make 4 links with class content
You must underline those 4 links (You lose points if you don’t underline.)
b) You must link 1 section of your essay to 1 course pack reading (don’t quote, just rephrase). Mention who it is coming from using APA style since you are discussing someone else’s idea.

You are not allowed to use quotes from any book or an internet source.

Cover page
Outline

Introduction:
State what essay is about; in a sentence or two, introduce the key ideas that the paper will examine. Be original in your intro or have a hook to grab the attention of the reader.
Make sure you don’t mention any findings about your socialization process. This is for the conclusion.

Body:
Start each paragraph by stating a key (main) point (topic sentence).  Then make supporting arguments that give evidence for that key point in your topic sentence. Develop the idea:  explain, give details and examples, etc.

Conclusion:
Summarize your whole essay, not just parts.
