Write a 3 page paper on the movie “Black Swan”… I have included the professor’s instructions on how to write a paper on a film…. the focus needs to be on the directors art of film… how he used the camera/scene etc to give the film it’s emotion.
I can’t have any sources, as it is supposed to be about my thoughts on the film.
_______
Guidelines for Writing a Paper on Film
What is the genre of the film? Examples: light comedy, farce, tragedy, tragicomedy, religious epic, war, historical drama, fantasy, science fiction, animation, action, romance, mystery, etc. Please avoid any comments that have nothing to do with the film itself. Example: Do not say, “I was caught in traffic on the way to the theater.” Stick to the task at hand.
What is the setting of the film? Example: The film was set in London and the south Atlantic during the 1980s.
Give a brief summary, no more than one paragraph, of the plot. Example: The film is about an English adventurer who wants to join up with the British forces preparing to fight in the Falkland Islands. There is, however, resistance from his family and friends, who think that he ought to remain at home. The story revolves around his efforts to successfully join the British army, and the story shows the effects that fighting in battle had on him.
Please avoid going into all of the sub-plots. For example, even a tragedy can have respites of humor, but that wouldn’t make the film a comedy. There are mixed genres, though, like “Mash,” which was a tragicomedy because of its strong elements of both comedy and tragedy in more or less equal amounts.
Who are the protagonist and the antagonist? Please avoid using actors’ names. Just use the characters’ names in the film or, if you have forgotten some of the names, just use the roles that they play. Example: the hero’s father was dead set against his son joining up to fight so far away from home.
A film is all about images in motion. So pick out some powerful images from the film that showed the work’s content, which in a film means what the film has taught you about the human condition. Example: if it is a war genre, does the content teach us that war is horrible and cruel? If so, how do the images bear out this message? Are there tragic close-up shots of the wounded? Or, if the content suggests that war can be noble and good, are there wide-angle shots of the victorious troops and the cheering civilians? The content of a film, of course, can be rather complex, so the message can have many different subtle points that are brought out by the moving images. Long camera shots can create a calming effect or mood in the film, while a series of short camera shots builds excitement. Please review page 306 of our textbook for nine of the most commonly used camera shots in film.
In discussing the important and memorable images of the film, just remember the words that we used when talking about paintings and photographs: color, light and shadow, framing, etc. Example: In the film, the director avoided the use of bright and cheerful colors. I think that this was done to impress upon the viewer the seriousness of war. Example: to increase the feelings of fear and impending disaster, the climactic battle scene was set in the early evening hours where there were a lot of deep and dramatic lighting effects.
Use as many of the terms and concepts from our drama and film study guide as you find appropriate. Example: The spectacle in this film was awesome. The battle scenes lit up the sky, and the powerful jets screaming overhead added to the excitement and thrill of the moving images. And, of course, please make sure that you have studied the chapter in our textbook on film.
