This story is a complete contrast between Brave Orchid and Moon Orchid where Brave orchid lives a successful life by being ready to try and to live more independent life. She saves the amount that her husband sends her and enrolls in a medical college. Out of this, she makes a successful career as a doctor, in opposition to this; Moon Orchid leads a miserable dependent life that she ends up mad and later dead. The story was positioned there so as to help a job in the quest of having an independent life.

The last chapter which is A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipeherself. From this, Kingston realizes that in order to be successful; she cannot continue being silent, and she had to be proud of herself. It is out of this anger that she torments another Chinese girl in her school that is ever silent for the fear of intimidation for being a Chinese. It has made her appreciate herself for who she is and stop feeling pity for herself for being a Chinese.
