Why do falling objects reach a terminal velocity?

As an object accelerates (usually downwards due to gravity), the drag force acting on the object increases causing acceleration to decrease. At a particular speed the weight of the object equals the the drag force. At this point the object ceases to accelerate together. And continues falling with a constant speed called terminal velocity.
