violence in Newark based on the theory
Survey
Paper instructions:
The goal of this assignment is to create a survey on violence in Newark based on the theory (social
bonds, self-control, social learning and life course theories) you chose at the beginning of the semester.
Taking into account what you just learned about survey design, create your own survey given
consideration to brevity, precision, specificity, bias, mutually exclusive, exhaustive, etc. WRITE THE
QUESTIONS AND EVERY POSSIBLE ANSWER, JUST AS YOU WOULD FIND THEM IN A SURVEY (INCLUDING A LINE
FOR OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS).
– As the dependent variable, you want to measure a form of violence.
– As independent variables, you want to establish measures derived of the theory you selected
The article you read for Assignment# 1 will serve as a guide on how to measure concepts like self-
control, social bonds, social learning and life course theories. See section METHODS / METHODOLOGY in
your article (probably under heading “Measures”, “Instrument” or “Survey”). You can write the
questions addressing different units of analysis (i.e., you can write the questions assuming you will be
interviewing offenders or victims or organization leaders or families and acquaintances of
victims/offenders.)
– Your survey should be about 15 questions in total and include at least:
o 1 warm up, introductory question
o 3 independent variable questions
o 3 dependent variable questions
o 3 demographic questions

Notes from our last class session:
• Follow the guidelines for survey construction in Chapter 9: short questions, no bias, etc.
• Don’t start from scratch: the articles have lists of questions that can help you, use them! (BUT
DON’T JUST COPY THEM, ADAPT THEM AS YOU SEE FIT)
• Just an idea: 1-2 questions per concept dimension
• Type the questions and ALL the range of answers (or a line for open-ended questions)
• SUMMARY: WRITE A SURVEY TO MEASURE VIOLENCE IN NEWARK
