Aims
This assignment is designed to develop and assess
• your awareness of a range of texts in your chosen area
• your ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate these texts in their contexts
• your skills in composing and commenting on text(s) for specific purposes.
You should write an essay which analyses, compares and contrasts your chosen texts, taking into account the contexts in which they were written (eg the author, the audience, and any other circumstances that you think are relevant.
Your essay should include the following:
• a cover sheet and contents page
• the selected texts (observing copyright)
• an introduction explaining the rationale for the choice of texts, giving an overview of the range, highlighting in general terms the similarities/contrasts between them, and indicating how they will be treated, analysed, interpreted, evaluated
• detailed commentary, analysis, and evaluation of the submitted texts and their contexts, referring to concepts and theories as in, for example, Carter (1997) and Pope (1998), and to aspects such as fitness for purpose, content, structure, style, effects.
• a conclusion, which includes your reflection on your achievement of the learning outcomes of the module.
• a bibliography.
• The word limit is 2000 words.
• The Portfolio must be word-processed and two hard copies submitted.
Allocation of Marks
The following criteria will be used to assess the essay with marks (75% of the module) allocated for the following:
• Evidence of wide reading and appropriateness of the selection of texts
in relation to the learning outcomes of the module. (10%)
• The introduction — content, clarity, cohesiveness. (10%)
• Detailed analysis of sample text(s). (70%)
• The conclusion. (10%)
In each of the sections above the clarity, accuracy, effectiveness, fluency, and appropriateness of your writing style(s) will be taken into account.
