Type a response (minimum 370 words) for each visit to the event.
Your responses should include (at a minimum):
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN—Information about the show (artist/artists included, title of show/name of event, location of event, and when the event was hosted).
• WHY and HOW— What materials and themes are represented in the show? What techniques did the artist/s use? Discuss why you think the artist choose to represent and create the art that was included in the show. Talk about what works drew you in and why. Make connections to other experiences, artists, or shows (contextualize your experience). You may also want to discuss one work in detail, to help describe and explain your experience at the event.
SAMPLE ART EVENT RESPONSE PAPER:
On November 15, 2010 I attended the art event entitled, Running the Numbers: An American Self Portrait, digital images by Chris Jordan. It was located in the Halsey Gallery. In his images, Chris Jordan tells the ugly truth about American consumption by stacking up waste to form artistic images. Most of the pieces were very large; I had to stand far away to see the entire image. However large the photos were, the waste stacked to make the image was very small and hard to make out unless you stood a foot away from the images. His point was that even small objects of waste, like aluminum cans, light bulbs, paper grocery bags, cigarettes, etc. can have a huge impact when you recognize that we all use these things.
The image that I was most impressed with was the last one I saw before leaving the gallery. It was a recreation of Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. I was able to see the real painting this past summer at the Art Institute of Chicago, and I probably stood in front of the larger-than-life-size painting for more than half an hour. Being one of my favorite pointillist paintings, I was astounded by Jordan’s recreation in that each dot was not paint, but an aluminum can. As I looked closer, sure enough, there were Coca Cola, Sprite, and other colorful cans that made up the entire composition. The card showed that it had 106,000 cans, the amount used in America every 30 seconds.
To me, the gallery felt extremely minimalist. Unlike other exhibitions I have seen in the Halsey before, where there were objects placed in the middle of the floor that you could walk around, the photos were large and flat on the very white walls. There was nothing to draw attention away from the images and from the jarring statistics that accompanied them. Overall, I was underwhelmed by this exhibit, with the exception of the Seurat photo. It seemed like some of the photos were just too big, and my eyes after walking up and then away from the photo several times, could not adjust. However, in getting audiences to understand that we as Americans waste too much, the artist succeeded.
Because I have seen two exhibits from Bluesphere: The Earth Art Expo, I feel obligated to say that the Bottle Cap Mandala in the Addlestone Library was far better than these images of Chris Jordan’s. Chris Jordan’s images were flat and difficult to see but the Bottle Cap Mandala was much more 3D and interactive with the audience as the audience can walk around it. I like the idea of art being a way to get people to understand the problem of American consumption. I think the idea of having Earth Art at the college will enlighten more people to change their daily habits in order to make a difference for our planet.
