Essay 4: Researched Argument of Persuasion
Essay Assignment:
Argumentation uses clear thinking and logic to convince readers of the soundness of a particular opinion on a controversial issue. Persuasion incorporates a balance of emotional appeal to urge readers to commit themselves to a course of action (LW 381). In this 800-1,000 word essay, you will present a persuasive argument on an approved topic using appropriate scholarly resources as evidence to support your claims.
• Necessary Elements:
• Approved Topic
o Topic must be current, debatable, researchable, and manageable.
o You will begin with an article that leads to a General Subject. After preliminary research you will narrow your topic.
• Strong Thesis
o Thesis will be clear, firm, and debatable.
o You will craft a working thesis early on, but that may change once your research is underway.
• Credible Evidence
o Your paper will include 3-5 secondary sources. At least 3 of those sources must be located through the Library Databases. Any other sources must be approved.
o Your evidence will be smoothly incorporated using at least 3 direct quotations and a combination of summary and paraphrase.
• Logical and Coherent Organization
o Content will be organized in outline format before drafting begins.
o Paragraphs will rely on topic sentences to keep them tied to the thesis and keep the information within organized.
o Transitions will be used throughout the paper to draw smooth connections.
• Appropriate Use of Appeals
o Ethos, pathos, and logos will be used in a balanced and effective manner.
• Audience Awareness
o Your paper will show an awareness of your particular audience and take into consideration opposing viewp01oints with the intent to highlight common ground and refute counterarguments.
• Appropriate Style, Formatting, and Citation
o Essay will remain in 3rd person and employ college-level grammar.
o Document and citations will follow MLA style.
