Paper details:

Read Chapter 7 & 8 of Generalist Case Management. Read Chapter 7 of Treatment Planning for Person-Centered Care. Marianne Woodside & Tricia McClam (2013)

In your own understanding, respond to each question in about a ½ page per question, providing original examples where indicated.

During the initial interview, the case manager should strive to communicate a helping attitude toward the client. This may be accomplished by being sensitive to the needs of the client and communicating warmth, acceptance, and genuineness. The case manager also needs to be sensitive to issues of diversity (race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, etc.).

1. Create an original example of a client you are working with as a substance abuse counselor that illustrates your understanding of the above paragraph. Include the strengths-based approach in your example.

During the initial interview, the communication skills of the case manager are critical in developing a positive relationship with the applicant. Using language that the applicant can understand, showing congruence between verbal and nonverbal messages, and practicing active listening all contribute to relationship development. Listening involves more than just hearing what the applicant says verbally. The case manager’s behavior should also include attending to the nonverbal messages of the applicant, keeping an open posture and a comfortable distance, maintaining appropriate eye contact, and staying relaxed.

2. Given the client you created in question 1, illustrate your understanding of the above paragraph in your work with this same client. Remember to consider cultural diversity.

After the initial assessment phase in the case management process, the case manager and client enter the planning phase. Part of planning may also include gathering additional information. Case managers frequently rely on interviewing and testing as data collection methods. Interviewing and test administration should be culturally sensitive and conducted only by professionals who are qualified to do so.

3. Compare interviewing and testing as data collection methods, and the qualifications required of each. Discuss how the types of data have potential sources of error, and why this should be taken into consideration whenever interpreting results and making decisions with a client seeking substance abuse treatment.

A case file often includes medical, psychological, social, educational, and vocational information.

4. Discuss the importance of medical information, when a psychological evaluation is indicated, the benefits of a social history, educational background and when a vocational evaluation might benefit the client seeking substance abuse treatment. How would this help determine the level of care needed?
