This written assessment item places you in the role of an employee of a private certifying
consultancy firm. In this position you are given a project to work on that involves assessing an
alternative solution as recognised by the Building Code of Australia for a proposed building.
You will be required to review the alternative solution using the principles in the Building Code
of Australia and the International Fire Engineering Guidelines as a guide, provide an
executive summary of the solution, and identify any amendments required to the alternative
solution to ensure compliance with the Building Code of Australia and consistency with the
International Fire Engineering Guidelines.
You will be required to write a professional report that gives background, justification and
recommendations to your solution/s. The scenario is fully explained within the assessment
item briefing document that can be downloaded from Blackboard and should require no
further explanation. You may be required to make assumptions or ‘educated’ guesses on any
information/material that you believe to be missing. If this is the case you are to explain/justify
these assumptions.

Assignment 3 places you in the role of an employee of a private certifying consultancy firm.
In this position you are given a building to work on that is subject to an alternative solution as
recognised by the Building Code of Australia.
1.2.2 The alternative solution will ‘generally’ address the non-compliances with the deemed to
satisfy provisions and relevant performance requirements in the Building Code of Australia.
1.2.3 You will be required to review the entire report including the alternative solutions using
the principles in the Building Code of Australia and the Fire Safety Engineering
Guidelines as a guide, provide an executive summary of the solutions and identify any
amendments required to the report and solutions to ensure compliance with the
Building Code of Australia and consistency with the Fire Safety Engineering
Guidelines.

Please find attached assignment 3 briefing document and report.

The Fire Engineering Report is a proposed single storey shopping centre – only similar to the Assignment 1 building so you can see issues for consideration.
Some information that may assist you with Assignment 3.

This assignment draws strongly upon your understanding of the BCA, and in particular the IFEGs and material from lecturers.

The assignment is technically driven with a legally binding content. There needs to be an objective assessment of the solutions, facts and figures in the report. The report needs to be evaluated against the BCA and the IFEGs.

Please read the ‘Assignment 3 – assessment item-briefing document’…it explains Assignment 3 including how to approach this task.

For example: You will be required to review the entire report including the alternative solutions using the principles in the Building Code of Australia and the Fire Safety Engineering Guidelines as a guide, provide an executive summary of the solutions and identify any amendments required to the report and solutions to ensure compliance with the Building Code of Australia and consistency with the Fire Safety Engineering Guidelines.

As per point 1.2.3 of the brief, you are assessing the entire report against the BCA and the IFEGs including the Clauses, the Performance Requirements and ALL aspects of the proposed solutions (this means a complete a
assessment of the solutions not just the sub systems).

There are issues/errors/omissions/inconsistencies etc. all throughout the report.

For example:
-If you identify an incorrect BCA clause/Performance Requirement or a Performance Requirement missing state this and explain why…
-If you reviewed a solution against the IFEGs and noted a figure used in the report that is not in accordance with the IFEGs then state this and what it should be….
-Check report administration issues: from spelling to format to content…
-Does the report follow guideline requirements etc…
-If the solution proposes qualitative and quantitative assessment has both been undertaken…
-Many figures/statements in the report relate to the IFEGs – check they are correct, that they relate to the BCA in terms of what they need to achieve.
-Use the Assumptions in the brief to also guide your assignment.

Your Assignment:
-Industry report format: not an essay: use headings, bullet points etc.
-Check your assignment spelling and grammar: use Australian English (e.g. organisation not organization).
-Include a reference list at the end of the assignment (check the UoN library website as it has examples on correct referencing style).
