THEORIES OF MOTIVATION

2 Pages

Refer to your 15-item Wish List. Chose a single motivational theory that explains the content of what motivates you. In other words, identify the underlying need(s) that are reflected in your Wish List by classifying (or categorizing) each item from your 15-Item “Wish List” in terms of the level/type of need(s)/drive it might satisfy, according to the chosen theory.

Consider the following Thories:
– Maslow – if your needs can be arranged in a hierarchy. Do some of your wishes represent “survival”, “security”, “social”, etc.?
– McClelland – do your wishes reflect things that have nothing to do with survival, but desires to “achieve”, have “power”, and/or connect with others (affiliation)?
– Four-drive – does your list contain items that trigger emotions–in each dr

Write an essay in which you explain how the needs you identified motivate (influence) your behavior in your present job (I am a college soccer coach). If you are not currently employed, talk about how the needs influenced past work behavior; if you have never held a full-time job, you may speculate about future work behavior. Your explanation should address what you are (were, will be) looking for.
As you review each item on your Wish List:
– Define it using the correct concepts; explain why or how this wish is connected to a given NEED (or drive). Consider the following in your response:
– Which need(s) is/are strongest or more important to you? How does the chosen motivation theory address the named need(s)? Give personal examples.
– What emotion(s) is/are triggered by the wish? Describe the experience.

– Be sure that your response shows that you have done the assigned textbook reading. A particularly strong essay will include appropriate references to the Steers et. al. article and the TED Talk!

P.S. You don’t have to talk about all 15 items on the wishlist. I have listed them in order of importance with 1 the most important and 15 the least.
