Theories of International Politics: explore a theoretical question or, issue in greater depth

1.Is classical realism relevant to understanding issues such as human rights, environmental problems, or the
role of communications technology in world politics? (You may choose to focus on one or more of these
issues.)

2.Democratic peace theory only applies to a Eurocentric world; with the rise or resurgence of states like
China or Russia the democratic peace will face increasing challenges. Discuss.

3.Compare and contrast neorealist and English School approaches to the balance of power and war.

4.Compare and contrast neoliberal institutionalist and constructivist approaches to international
organizations.
5.Feminism is a good theory to approach ?women?s issues?, but it does not really speak to the issues which
have traditionally been most important in IR. Discuss.

7.While poststructuralism is good at criticizing mainstream IR theory, it fails to offer a convincing
alternative (i.e. a ?constructive? approach to world politics). Discuss.

8.Postcolonialism is a good theory to approach the global South, but it does not really speak to (important
events or phenomena in) the international relations of the global North. Discuss.

9.Choose one approach to international political sociology (historical sociology OR sociological
institutionalism OR governmentality analysis), and explain what this approach allows us to see about
international politics that conventional political science approaches miss.
