Paper instructions:
Please write a 2,000 word essay on cinematic authorship with reference to any of the films that we have watched in class (Gone with the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939) & Rebecca (1940)). Define the problem of authorship (without assuming it synonymous with the work of the director) in relation to some of the ideas developed by Michel Foucault in What is an Author? and suggest the manner in which the film you have selected problematizes the author function. Make certain you address the question of how the film you are analyzing is the product of a particular historical moment and a specific mode of production. You are encouraged to use additional books and readings (those I uploaded) or the readings which in the syllabus to make your case.
