the Waste Land
Order Description
step 1
Find a critical source analyzing “the Waste Land” in terms of Modernism. Study the arguments and use them (agree with them or disagree with them) in your own analysis.
step 2
Study the following works. Analyze them in light of the “Things I Want You To Think About Modernism (https://prezi.com/altd5je1xtbm/modernism/).” You won’t know the exact questions but prepare by thinking about which of these questions apply to which story.
Story:
“Indian Camp”
“The Blackstone Rangers ” by Gwyndolyn Brooks

Notes:
-To do well on this test you will need to apply as many of the Modernist criteria as possible to each work. You won’t need to come up with the “right” analysis, but you MUST figure out which questions to apply.
-In addition to applying the right criteria, you will be asked to make judgments about whether the chosen works are modernist or realist. In some senses this will just be a judgment call. Few works will perfectly fit any criteria. The judgment, then, will involve determining what you consider to be the essence of modernism (or whatever you think the work is.) This “judgment” will be part of your grade – similar to making a risk-taking claim in your paper, this is where you will need to push past the criteria in order to make a claim about a given work.
