The Things They Carried

Assignment 3: Research/Proposal Paper (2000 words)

**Sample papers posted in Eduat under “Sample Papers.”

This research paper will build on Paper 4, your Analysis Paper. You should research that topic so you’ll need to decide ahead of time what you will analyze for Assignment 4 so I recommend reading through those guidelines as well. Your research must be thorough and properly cited both in-text and in your Works Cited page. A minimum of ten (10) credible, peer-reviewed sources must be used. Your rough draft must include an annotated bibliography.

The body of your research will largely depend on your choice for Assignment 4 since the project will build toward that one. For example, say I wanted to write a Literary Analysis on the symbolism in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants.” My research would likely contain biographical sites about Hemingway; sites on modernism (the period in which he wrote); other criticism written on the piece; sites on the use of metaphor and symbolism. If I picked a contemporary author like Margaret Atwood, I would also include links to Youtube sites of her reading her work or of journalists interviewing her (which could then be used later in the Multi-modal Presentation). Obviously, if you write a Rhetorical essay on David Bowie, you’d be researching musical technique and style and influences as well as biographical information and criticism. So once you have a topic, the research options should become obvious, but if not, please email me with questions!

An annotated bibliography just lists the source information with a note from you about why it will be necessary to your final analysis.

**Very important note: At this point, you will not be analyzing anything, just presenting information!
