Requirements: This essay should be 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced, and 12-point Times Roman font or equivalent. It will count for 20% of the total course grade. Hand in a hard copy of the paper in class but if not possible, alert me in advance. Quotations and other references to specific passages should be either footnoted or referenced in parentheses (authors last name/brief title and page number). For footnoting, follow whatever style (MLA, Chicago, etc.) you are comfortable with. Class lectures/discussions may be cited by date. Please note that your answer should not be a mere mention of facts or a review of class notes. Having a clear, specific thesis is as important as are analyses, concrete examples, and organization. Introduce your points, develop them one by one, and conclude in an organized manner. The best paper will be original in its efforts, analytical in approach, and one that engages with readings and class lectures closely. Please avoid grammatical errors. You are free to use outside sources (including websites) but you need to discuss them with the instructor beforehand, either in person or through email. Outside sources should be used only as supplemental and NOT as main sources.
