The idea of incarceration examined

Topic: the idea of incarceration examined

Description: [?]
Preferred language style: English (U.K.)

This question is regarding the idea of incarceration examined in the
text. Despite the fact that incarceration is brought about by formal
institutions, they state that excessive use of such can and may affect
the neighbourhood’s social organization. If there are high rates of
incarceration it may result in negative feelings towards the criminal
justice system, but on the other hand the removal of the criminals
from the neighbourhoods means that they are not present to commit
those crimes anymore (Bernard, Snipes, and Gerould, 2010).

It is also stated that although incarcerating criminals up to a
certain point deters crime, excessive incarceration results in
increased crime (Bernard, Snipes, and Gerould, 2010). This could be
debated back and forth depending upon your ideas of incarceration and
the deterring effects it has. If one individual believes in
incarceration as a specific deterrence then they may believe in taking
that one offender out of the community will only eliminate his/her
crime. On the other hand if someone believes that incarceration has a
general deterrence then they may believe that incarcerating one single
offender will deter many people in the community. Or someone may
believe that incarceration is not a deterrent what-so-ever and that
the crime rate may stay the same or go up.

So my question to everyone is do you believe that the higher the
incarceration rate in a neighbourhood/community, the higher the rates
of crime??
