Great Gatsby Essay

2016 Midterm

With a partner you must write an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion
proving a well-written, clear thesis which answers ONE of the questions below AND
connects to the poem below. Use OneNote and Google Docs to collaborate, outline and
organize your ideas first, then create for writing the essay. Groups will add me to the
Google Doc so I can monitor progress and see that all responsibilities are shared, and
then both students will submit the essay to Turnitin.com.

Topic 1
James Gatz, Jay Gatsby’s real name, was a young, idealistic boy living in the Midwest.
He embraced the American Dream and followed it relentlessly. Somewhere along the
way his dream changed. Identify the dream in its infancy, explain where and why it
changes, and discuss the results of this. Be sure to incorporate symbols into your analysis.

Topic 2
F Scott Fitzgerald writes
The Great Gatsby
to comment on the society in which he is
living. One of the book’s major themes, or comments, deals with morality and
responsibility. Identify this theme in your own words and use symbols to discuss its
presence throughout the novel.

The Valve
by
David R. Slavitt

The one-way flow of time we take for granted, but what if the valve is defective? What if the threads
on the stem wear thin, or the stuffing box or the bonnet ring leaks, or the joints to the pipe ring fail,
and there’s backwash? It happens.
And then old loves,
meeting again, have no idea what to do,
resuming or not resuming from where they were
years before. Or the dead come back to chat.
Or you are reduced for a giddy moment to childhood’s
innocent incompetence. You look up
as if to see some hint in the sky’s blackboard.
But then, whatever it was, some fluff or grit
that clogged the works, works free, and again time passes,
almost as before, and you try to get on with your life.
