In this module, you’ve taken the first steps of the strategic approach to human resources management, by taking a high, wide view of the world your organization operates in and a detailed look at your organization’s culture. Now, you bring together your findings from the different activities in this module in order to demonstrate your awareness and understanding of the connections between the external environment and organizational goals.

This assignment will comprise 10 per cent of your final course grade and will be marked out of 100.

Instructions

Write a three- to four-page report (approximately 7501,000 words) that provides a brief description of your organization and the external environment it operates in. Include in your report the following details:

1. A description of the human resources value proposition and how it applies to your organization. (40 marks)

2. An overview of the external factors that are currently having the greatest influence on your organization. (40 marks)

3. Where your organization is right now on the path from good to great as described by Collins. (20 marks)

Assignment 2: Understanding Human Resources’ Customers

Introduction

In this module, you have learned about the importance human resources professionals have in understanding the needs of internal and external customers. From an internal perspective, human resources professionals need to understand the business outcomes of their clients. From an external perspective, human resources professionals need to assist the organization to focus on the outcomes or product the organization produces, developing a talent pool that is excited about delivering a quality product or service. The closer the alignment between the human resources department and the organization overall, the more capable the human resources department is of being strategic.

This assignment will comprise 10 per cent of your final course grade and will be marked out of 100.

Instructions

Write a three- to four-page report (approximately 7501,000 words) that defines the needs of internal customers. Choose one department or area within your organization. Interview individuals within the department to determine the following details to include in your report:

1. The description of the department and its key purpose. (20 marks)

2. The top three goals within the department for the upcoming year. (20 marks)

3. Describe your organization’s culture and its impact on the goals of the department. (20 marks)

4. How the human resources department can contribute to those goals (20 marks)

5. How the human resources department can assist the other department in being market focused (10 marks)

Assignment 3: Planning and Implementing the Effective Flow of People Within the Organization

Introduction

In this module, you have worked through the entire forecasting, planning, and recruitment process. In this assignment, you will apply the concepts related to forecasting and planning to the work group.

This assignment will comprise of 25 per cent of your final course grade and will be marked out of 100.

Instructions

Part A: Define Your Work Group, Goals, and Competencies (30 marks)

1. Describe each position in the work group. Refer to the staffing chart you created and attach it to your finished assignment.

2. Define your organization using the hedgehog theory (What can it be the best atwhat drives its economic engine?).

3. Describe the business outcomes and goals of the workgroup.

4. Describe three core competencies required for your work group or organization overall to thrive. (Write a definition for each core competency.)

5. Assess each person in your work group to your list of core competencies. Identify any competency gaps in your work group.

Part B: Assess Needs and Labour Markets (30 marks)

1. Describe the staffing needs for your work group in the next two to three years. State the assumptions you presume will influence your organization.

2. Describe the supply and demand for labour for each position within your workgroup.

3. Explain how you would modify the work being done by existing staff to adjust to conditions in two to three years. This is your greatest opportunity to be creativewould shifting some duties make more sense?

Part C: Prepare to Fill a Vacancy (40 Marks)

1. One of the positions listed in the work group (in Part A of this assignment) has become vacant. Develop the following tools to fill the vacancy:

Job advertisement. Write a job advertisement for this position and remember to clearly define the skills and abilities you are looking for.

Advertisement strategy. Create an advertisement strategy for this position including a budget for advertising expenses.

Selection process. Design a selection process for the position that may include testing (if required) and selection interview questions. Explain who will interview the candidates and why they are on the committee.

Interview questions. (List the interview questions (10 to 15) you would ask when interviewing an applicant for the position. Clearly link the questions to the competencies you are looking for (an easy way is to use the competencies as subtitles in your list of questions).

  • Use behavioural questioning strategy by framing the questions so that they probe recent past experiences (as a predictor of future behaviour).
  • Design each question so that the candidate is encouraged to provide a full and detailed response.
  • Consider additional probing questions, which might really get the candidate thinking. For example: What if it hadn’t worked out so well? What would you have done?” or Tell me more about the difficult employee.”

Create an assessment grid for this interview.

  • What kind of scale will you use to assess the candidate?
  • If you think formal testing will be required, how will you rank the importance of the testing, the interview, and the references?

Assignment 4: Feedback and Coaching

Introduction

In this module, you have gained knowledge about and practiced giving feedback and coaching sessions. In this assignment, you will demonstrate the depth of your knowledge and your level of skill by conducting both a feedback and coaching session with a volunteer partner. Concentrate on your preparation for each session and your reflections after each session rather than your performance during the session. After you have conducted both sessions, you will document your results in a report.

This assignment will comprise of 20 per cent of your final course grade and will be marked out of 100.

Instructions

Choose a person in your organization or department that you feel would benefit from performance feedback and coaching. Make sure the person is aware that you will be delivering feedback and coaching. Make certain that you ask permission from the person and that the person willingly agrees to participate. Explain to the person that the sessions are part of a course assignment. Set the parameters of each session clearly before you begin.

Part A: Scripting a Feedback Session (40 marks)

1. Write a one- to two-page report (approximately 250500 words) that describes the feedback you would like to deliver to a person in your organization or department. For purposes of anonymity, assign a new name to the person. After you have prepared your script, conduct the session. Your report should:

  • Describe the performance issue. (10 marks)
  • Identify a competency linked to the issue (why is it important to the organization that the issue be resolved?). (10 marks)
  • Include the script of the feedback session. Include questions and describe your process. (15 marks)
  • Summarize how the session went. Identify what went well and what you would change. (5 marks)
  • Apply the skill/will matrixwhere does the person fit within the matrix. (10 marks)

Part B: Coaching Session (40 marks)

1. After you have completed the feedback session, arrange to have a coaching session (a coaching conversation). During your session, remember to ask questions, listen actively, and whenever possible, help the individual to look at the problem from a variety of perspectives. Take time to brainstorm alternatives and come up with a plan of action. Let the person choose the options that seem most energizing or exciting, but make sure that they are in line with the organizational goal.

2. Then write a one- to two-page report (approximately 250500 words) that summarizes the coaching session. Include in the report the following details:

  • List the questions you used and explain why you used them. (20 marks)
  • Describe how the performance goal was chosen. (10 marks)
  • Describe some of the ideas that came out of the brainstorming session. Include the actual action plan. (10 marks)
  • Based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, describe the extent style played in your assessment of each person in your work group. Are there individuals in your work group who have different styles? (10 marks)

Part C: Support and Tracking (20 marks)

Describe the supports required to help the employee be successful in the future, Consider what assistance, training, coaching or future support is needed to ensure that the employee is on track and focused on making a positive change in the future, When will you check in and review the progress made and how will you measure or evaluate the effort or lack of effort that results from the coaching session.

Introduction

The Final Project will allow you to pull together all that you have learned about strategic human resources, and develop a human resources plan for a department within your chosen organization.

This assignment will comprise 25 per cent of your final course grade and will be out of 100 marks.

Instructions

Choose a department within your organization; if you are not currently employed, select an organization to focus on for this assignment. (Note: you will need to talk to individuals within the chosen department.) Write a five- to seven-page report (approximately 2,000 words) that includes the following details:

Part A: Describe Organizational Purpose (20 marks)

1. Describe the main purpose of the department that you have selected: what does it produce or do?

2. What are the top goals of the department over the next three years?

3. Research the external factors or trends occurring that may impact the organization (refer to external analysis in Module 1).

Part B: Define Human Resources Needs (60 marks)

Where possible, assess any trends or data available. Within the department, describe the human resources needs over the next three years, including:

  • Define the staffing needs of the group, identify the main positions within the department, and define changes.
  • Assess the availability of labour for vacant positions.
  • Define the competencies required by the department
  • Develop your recruitment and selection strategies for the position. Where will you post your position and what is your ad budget?
  • Identify training and development needs.

Part C: Recommendations (20 marks)

As a result of your assessment, recommend two human resources strategies for your chosen organization:

1. The First strategy should be focused on achieving one of the key organizational objectives outlined in section A (above)

2. The Second strategy should be focused on refining one of the HR service offerings outlined in Part B (above).

Provide a description of the strategy and explain why the item chosen is important to the overall success of the organization’s goals.
