The Ethic frame – basic concepts

Major Ethical Frames of Reference

Ethics (an ethical frame) is a formal, systematic, and explicit articulation, a theory, of the moral frame of human behavior. There are three main theories. Deontological theory or frame: Some acts are obligatory regardless of the situations, results and consequences. Utilitarian theory or frame: An act is ethical (morally right) that creates the greatest pleasure or happiness for the individual or for the greatest number of individuals. Eudaimonic theory or frame: Being virtuous, excellence as a habit, doing good or living well according to one’s values (Aristotle says we ought to be moderate in all things) is being ethical; this is Happiness.

The prisoner’s dilemma

Two members of a criminal gang are arrested and imprisoned. Each prisoner is in solitary confinement with no means of speaking to or exchanging messages with the other. The police admit they don’t have enough evidence to convict the pair on the principal charge. They plan to sentence both to a year in prison on a lesser charge. Simultaneously, the police offer each prisoner a Faustian bargain. If he testifies against his partner, he will go free while the partner will get three years in prison on the main charge. Oh, yes, there is a catch … If both prisoners testify against each other; both will be sentenced to two years in jail.

Interactive tutorial of the Moral Theories

http://www.phgfoundation.org/tutorials/moral.theories/index.html

“Moral theories are the frameworks we use to justify or clarify our position when we ask ourselves “what should I do in this situation?” or “what is right or wrong for me?” There are many moral theories and there is no one right theory. They converge and often borrow from one another. Three theories will be described here. Consequentialism and Deontology have dominated moral reasoning over the last 300 years; Bioethics, a common morality theory, is a recent theory that dominates current thinking in health care settings.”
