The economy of the Soviet Union was in shambles because of a costly war in Afghanistan and the inability to secure resources. Mikhail Gorbachev began Perestroika and Glasnost which increased freedoms for the people of the Soviet Union. In your opinion, if the economy would not have been in shambles would the Cold War have ended in 1989? Would Gorbachev made these reforms?
