The Aeneid – Norton Anthology, World Literature Vol 1 (4th edition)

For this reading journal, is to compare The Aeneid with the other ancient epics we have read so far. To do this, you should review the description of the ancient epic from the introduction of Epic of Gilgamesh located on pages 20-22, the historical contexts for Homer located on pages 122-123. These provide background information about the epic genre and the form of the Homeric epics, which Virgil liberally borrows from. Consider the following question: What general features define the ancient epic and what similarities does The Aeneid share with Epic of Gilgamesh and/or The Odyssey.

Instead, consider this journal an exploration of an issue. Just be sure to edit and remove the first person if you use or adapt any of your Reading Journal material for one of the full-length paper assignments!
