Step one : have the novel read and the novel process work completes. Please be sure to complete the novel process during the reading of the novel or else this will entain added work for you. While reading l, you are absolutely not to refer to any other sources ( i.e . Spark notes, eNotes, cliff notes, literary criticism, ect). You are to gain your own personal understanding of the novel and its deeper meaning regarding human nature and society. Please see the criteria for the novel process which is on a separate sheet. The novel process work will guide ypur focus for your term paper as you will create an original, thought-provoking thesis statement from this work.

Step two: ( literary criticism and research notes) after reading the novel and creating your own stance on the text, you are to research what other have said and / or are saying about it today. You are required to find four ( 4) valid and relevant pieces of criticism to help build your argument. Be sure to read each piece carefully before deciding whether or not to use it and complete your research notes. Please print the criticism you find so you are able to access and interact with the work and be sure to keep record of the source for a works cited page. Refer to the criteria for the research notes for further information which can be found on a separate sheet.

Step 3 ) criteria :
– 7-10 pages in length. Work must be typed, double spaced, times new Roman font size 12 in proper MLA format.
– create a thought – provoking thesis statement to guide your work
– you must incorporate all five (5) of your sources within your work. ( the novel and four pieces of criticism)
– a minimum of eight (8) quotes must be used within the essay
– embed your textual evidence and criticism into your work to fully support your thinking
– create a proper works cited page to give credit to your sources
– be sure to cite your work properly. Plagiarism will result in an immediate failure of the paper
– please proofread. Errors should be minimal

While reading your novel, you should focus on the universal ideas and literary strategies and devices the author uses in order to create a deeper meaning of the text. Be purposeful with taking notes and tracking your thinking as you read. Please remember while you are reading and analyzing your novel do not refer to any outside sources; we want your authentic insights. The purpose of the novel process is to help you gain a deeper understanding of the novel while also helping you create an original thesis statement from this work.

Your final novel notes must include the following
– five (5) universal ideas and five (5) purpose statements

For each universal idea you need the following supporting elements :
– three (3) literary devices and strategies
– six (6) pieces of textual evidence ( for each literary decice/ strategy you need a minimum of two (2) pieces of textual evidence )
– three (3) brief explanations for each literary devices/ strategy ( synthesis ) ( a brief explanation of how the textual evidence and literary devices/ strategies connect to the universal idea and create deeper meaning )

RESEARCH NOTES AND PROCESS CRITERIA
After reading the novel and creating your own thesis on the text, you are to RESEARCH what others have said or are saying about it today. You are required to find four (4) solid and relevant pieces of criticism to help build and refute your argument to create a stronger sense of your stance.
