to investigate the gender regimes of industries, identifying barriers to women’s advancement and sources of inequality, i.e. “systematic disparities… in power and control over goals,

resources, and outcomes; workplace decisions such as how to organize work; opportunities for promotion and interesting work; security in employment and benefits; pay and other monetary

rewards; respect; and pleasures in work relations” (Acker, 2006) (p. 443). We also identify structural holes within industries that disrupt sex role traditionalism and foster opportunities for

women’s advancement therein (Ely & Padavic, 2007).

1) Brief historical development
2) Current cultural norms, values and beliefs
3) Current HR practices that explain the relative representation of women
4) The nature of the work involved (eg administrative versus blue collar front line work)
