College Level, must hit all of these points
1) What are “tar sands”? Where are the “tar sands” located? Where is the primary place where they are being exploited for commercial purposes? Why has this activity focused on that place?
2) Outline the history of tar sands as a source of oil. How is oil extracted from them? Include both its removal from the ground and subsequent, above ground processing. What market factors have affected the profitability of extracting oil from tar sands?
3) Who are the primary consumers of oil produced from tar sands? How is that oil transported? Is the market for oil from tar sands expanding or contracting? Why?
4) What are some of the ecological and social effects of their production? Describe two social movements challenging the expansion of tar sands. Why are the opposing tar sand expansion? On which aspects of the process have they focused their challenges? Where are these challenges occurring?
