Assignment #1: Sustainability Problem Definition

Overview:
Your first assignment is an individual essay in which you will begin to research the wicked sustainability
challenge that you and your group will be exploring this semester. The essay topic must be from the list we
provided. This essay is meant to familiarize you with your semester-long topic, and guide you through the
research, writing, and citation process before you begin your group projects and final report.
Essay Requirements:
Length: 700-1000 words (please double-space your document so your TA has space for in-line feedback)
Must have introduction and a conclusion paragraphs
Must include at least three (3) academic sources, cited in APA format
Must contain all information listed in the grading rubric on the next page. **use this to structure your essay!**
Suggested Essay Structure:
Introduction Paragraph – identify and describe the sustainability problem. Provide a brief history explaining the
origin and evolution of the problem. Be sure to mention:
1. Spatial (geographic) and temporal (time) scales
2. Environmental, social, and economic aspects
3. The important actors and stakeholders
Body Paragraphs – Explain the sustainability problem in terms of a wicked problem (refer to the example given
in your textbook, Box 2.1, page 46). Explicitly discuss all components: Vague problem definition; undefined
solution; no endpoint; irreversible, unique, and urgent.
Conclusion Paragraph:
1. Why did you choose this problem? Why should we care about this problem?
2. Now that you have done some background research, what questions do you still have about the
sustainability problem you defined? What would you like to learn more about?
