SUPREMATISM, DADA, DE STIJL, SURREALISM, AMERICAN

SUPREMATISM, DADA, DE STIJL, SURREALISM, AMERICAN

The discussion for our 13th week begins on Monday. The five styles/periods we are covering this week are Suprematism, Dada, de Stijl, Surrealism (Monday/Tuesday) and American (Wednesday/Thursday). It is everyone’s job on the discussion board to figure out how to identify/distinguish these two styles for Friday’s quiz.

1st, you must decide, based on the images and the reading in the text, which objects are from which period. Again, this is something that you will discuss as a group on Bb. Then you must figure out what the characteristics of each of these styles/periods are. Some images in the assigned reading do not belong to either of these styles/periods. Once you figure out which ones they are, you can ignore them.

The terms for the week are:

Monday/Tuesday:
readymade
Automatic writing or automatism
Biomorphic
Primary colors
Non-local color
Monochromatic
Installation art

Wednesday/Thursday:
Hudson River School
Harlem Renaissance
Stieglitz circle

These are the words you should choose from when writing your summary paper. These are also the terms that you will be quizzed on on Friday. There is a glossary in the back of the book.
