OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this journal assignment is to allow students to critically reflect on their own
identity.
Instructions: critical reflection for social workers is the ability to analyze our assumptions regarding our professional practice, with the aim of improving our social work skills. To practice in an anti- oppressive manner, it is important that social workers become self aware. One of the ways to do that is to critically reflect on our own identity and how we have all been impacted by positions of privilege and oppression. This assignment requires students to:
1) Construct an identity wheel (see identity wheel* sample) and
2) Answer the following questions in reflecting on their own identity.
Questions:
Reflecting on your identity wheel, describe your responses to ‘critical incidents’ that may have helped to shape your current identity. PLEASE NOTE THIS ASSIGNMENT CAN BE WRITTEN IN JOURNAL FORMAT, POINT FORM IS ACCEPTABLE, GIVEN IT IS AN ASSIGNMENT THAT IS USED FOR PERSONAL AND REFLECTIVE GROWTH. 1. The first time you were aware that your membership in a social group affected the way you would be treated
2. A time you became aware that your membership in a social group gave you privileges not enjoyed by members of other social groups.
3. A time you became aware that your membership in a social group meant that you were denied privileges enjoyed by others
4. A time you were aware of how having multiple targeted identities intensified your experience of oppression
5. A time you were aware of how having multiple privileged identities intensified your experience of privilege
6. Reflect on your feelings in completing this assignment commenting on how it will impact your social work practice

Objective: The purpose of this journal assignment is to allow students to explore and report on spirituality within an individual`s life. Instructions: As identified in the course material, the assessment of spirituality needs to go beyond faith affiliation. This assignment requires students to interview another person who has different religious or spiritual faith than their own and report on their perspectives on spirituality. The interviewee can be a fellow student, friend, family member or colleague. Students are required to explore the following questions with their interviewee, report on their answers and provide some analysis of their responses based on the course material. Students are also required to reflect on how they felt completing this assignment and what they learned from it. Pseudonyms are to be used to protect the identity of the individual
Questions:
Once your interviewee is comfortable ask them to reflect on their perspectives of spirituality using the following questions as a guide:
1. What nourishes you spiritually (i.e., music, nature, intimacy, witnessing heroism, meditation, creative expression, sharing another`s joy)
2. How does a religious affiliation influence your spirituality
3. What has been your experience from others in practicing your spirituality
4. What helps you maintain a sense of hope, sense of mean or purpose to your life when there is no
immediate apparent basis for it
