Format: 900-1200 words (about 3-4 pages), double spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, page numbers, stapled

Synopsis: Films contain a soundtrack with background music that highlights important parts, helps the audience feel more connected to the characters and story, expresses a character’s emotions or motivations, or adds to the particular experience portrayed in the film. For this essay, consider how a soundtrack of music could enhance or pair with one of the literary works that we’ve read. Pick one of the following works: “Petrified Man,” “Barn Burning,” “Getting Somewhere,” Electra, or Gilgamesh. Then, select a few moments (at least two, but probably more) where a song could add to the audience’s comprehension of those moments. You may choose songs from any time period, culture, or genre of music, as long as you explain why those particular songs connect to the literary text. Your essay should contain an analytical, argumentative thesis that makes a claim about what we can understand about the literary text by examining it in the context of this soundtrack. Remember to support your thesis with textual evidence.

Questions to Consider/Answer:

What do the songs reveal about the text that you may not have noticed before?
Do the songs contain specific lyrics or rhythms that represent specific moments, themes, and/or characters?
Does a particular genre of music best evoke something from the story/play/poem?
What connects the various songs you discuss?
What connects the various aspects of the literary work that you discuss?
Why is this literary text significant when examined in the context of music and/or particular songs? NO PLAGARISM!!!
