You must write a 3-4 page paper that critically investigates one aspect of marriage and the family in the United States. You are encouraged—but not required—to write your paper on a topic discussed in class (e.g. marriage, fertility, racial differences in family formation, and so forth). If you write a paper on a topic that we do not discuss in class, I strongly recommend you contact the TA to ensure you have a relevant topic.
Other requirements:
• The paper must be double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins. PROOFREAD BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR PAPER. Doing so will work in your favor.
• You must use/cite 6 reputable references, such as peer-reviewed journal articles or newspaper articles from the New York Times. Two of the 6 references must be collected outside of class.
• Summarize recent trends and change over time and present the main arguments as presented in your references. Devote 1-2 paragraphs of your paper to reflect why you are convinced (or not) by the arguments made in the literature. It’s fine to draw on personal experiences, but you must demonstrate some additional critical thinking here! Conclude by making 1 policy recommendation that you expect will further the well-being of families or family life. This policy discussion should be around a paragraph long.
• Rephrasing lecture notes, class discussion is acceptable, but you are expected to elaborate on our discussions!
