Researchers from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies tested
Researchers from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies tested about 166,000 people ages 16 to 65 in more than 20 countries and subnational regions. The people were given questions about reading/writing, math, and problem solving. The recently released results have caused some concerns among leaders in America. According to the results, Americans scored less than many other nationalities, and overall scored below the average of all test takers. Education, financial, and political leaders warn that adults in America need to acquire more basic knowledge or the future of the country is in danger. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement that the nation needs to find ways to reach more adults to upgrade their skills. Otherwise, he said, “no matter how hard they work, these adults will be stuck, unable to support their families and contribute fully to our country.” If this lack of knowledge is not corrected, some economists feel that other countries could pass America in terms of technology and development. Do you agree with those who feel it is important that all adults in America have basic educated knowledge in order to help their families and country, or can an “undereducated” adult support a family and contribute to the country? In an Argument Essay present your opinion using explanations and specific examples. (US adults are dumber than the average human By Associated Press October 8, 2013 from:
