The purpose of this assignment is to develop your ability to analyze photographs and their modes of display and circulation in writing. You will choose a current photography exhibition to visit in Toronto (a list of suggestions will be circulated in class several weeks before the due date). In your paper, you need to describe the exhibition and then provide a close reading of one photograph, analyzing its formal components and explaining how it relates to the photographic practices and theories we have studied in class. What key issues and traditions are being referenced by the photographer? How does the photograph reinforce or challenge the definitions of photography we have examined in class? Your discussion and analysis must build on and include explicit reference to our course readings and class discussions. You may choose to do some research if you have unanswered questions, but the central purpose of this assignment is to produce an analysis of the photograph and the exhibition. If you do make use of research be sure to include a properly formatted bibliography.
