Plays of Diversity

Each of you will choose from one of the selected plays, and using the library databases and internet as a primary means of research (EXCLUDING Wikipedia), you will research the playwright, reviews or write-ups of past productions and significance of the play to its cultural group (African American, Latino/Latina, Feminist, Political, Native American, Gay/Lesbian, Asian American.) You should be able to explain why the chosen play has relevance/significance to the related discussions in the text chapters.

You must use at least FIVE credible sources. THREE of these must be from a newspaper, magazine, or journal. Use the library databases to help you. Most of these plays will be discussed in the New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer or another popular newspaper. These can be read/published online, but check to ensure they are from a print article as well.

Note, you MUST include a formal bibliography in MLA or APA format.

Format of your paper should include the following:

Give title and author of the play

Summarize the plot, main characters and conflicts

Give a thorough background of the playwright (include education, awards, other writings, noteworthy insights…)

Explain the significance of the play based on the cultural group (Feminist, African American, Latino/Latina, Political…)

A thorough summary of at least TWO reviews of the play as well as a link to the reviews

Additional findings regarding the play (it would be great to find a video that has an interview with the author, or a clip from a production, etc…) Note: this is required to show your skill at research and finding useful information to inform you as an artist and student.

A bibliography of resources you used to collect the material in MLA or APA form (see note above)
