Sometimes research is used for nefarious purposes; sometimes it’s done with good intentions but still ends up hurting people. In order to minimize harm due to research, both the US and many other countries have put forth mechanisms to minimize harm to research participants, or people whose information is used in research. In the past, I’ve asked class members to write about an historical incident in which harm was done in the name of research. However, this year, I’d like you to each write about the potential harm that could result from researching the topics you are proposing…and how harm would be best avoided while still allowing good research to be done
