How to get started

When you are asked to compare and contrast something by a professor, it’s best to be direct.

Simple
This essay will compare and contrast the following: list what you will comparing and contrasting.

You can also start with a theme. This is probably the better way to go as it will tell the professor not only what you are comparing and contrasting but how.

Not as simple
This essay will explore by way of comparison and contrast how social class is used in Hamlet, Moby Dick, and Star Trek.

That sentence told the professor that you will use social class as a way of talking about three different works of narrative art.

Try using the second way to start your writing assignment. Here’s an example. Note that I avoided the use of “I” by using “the essay” instead. These sentences till the professor what you are about to do and how you will do it (compare and contrast)

Using a comparative approach, this essay will examine the theme of ___________ as it appears in the following two images: Image A (the flowers in the sink), Image 5 (the return slip image). Additionally the essay will briefly refer to images 1 (the tattoo), image B (the torn up writing), and image 2 (the brick ring).
