demonstrate the ability to evaluate scholarly research. In preparation for this assignment, read
this article for Critique Paper I:
Dunbar, N. E., Jensen, M. L., Bessarabova, E., Burgoon, J. K., Bernard, D. R., Harrison,
K. J., et al. (2012). Empowered by persuasive deception: The effects of power and deception on
dominance, credibility, and decision making. Communication Research, XX(X), 1-25.
Read this article for Critique Assignment II:
Wright, K. B., Rosenberg, J., Egbert, N., Ploeger, N. A., Bernard, D. R., & King, S.
(2012). Communication competence, social support, and depression among college students: A
model of Facebook and face-to-face support network influence. Journal of Health
Communication, 0, 1-17.
These articles are available on Blackboard. You will be asked to explain three criteria to assess
the research. After describing the criteria, you will provide examples from the article which
illustrate how the article meets or fails to meet the criteria’s standards.
PAPER ORGANIZATION. A brief description of each part follows:
1. Title Page. Generally follow the guidelines in the APA Style Manual
2. Abstract. It is a one-page summary of your entire paper. This is the last thing you
should write.
3. Introduction. Explain the purpose of the paper. Provide a brief background of the
Dunbar et al. article to orient the reader. This section sets the tone of the paper and
offers a preview of the paper’s organization.
4. Methods. In this section, you will create three criteria. Each will be its own
Methods sub-section. Each criterion will provide a solid foundation by which you
will analyze the research article. In this section, you must cite heavily. Describe
what is “good” versus “suspect” research. Each criterion should be developed
independently. Each criterion should be developed without reference to the Dunbar
et al. article being evaluated. Each criterion should have its own subheading. Your
three criteria are:
A. Sampling- What is the purpose of sampling? Discuss sampling; what are the four
major categories of sampling? What are examples of “good” sampling
techniques? How does a researcher know if a sampling method is “good” or
“suspect”?
B. Reliability – What is reliability? What is the relationship between reliability and
validity? What are the different types of reliability? How does a researcher know
if the estimated reliability is “good” or “suspect”?Generalizability of the research findings – What is the relationship between
“Generalizability” and “External Validity”? What is the relationship between
generalizability and sampling methods? What creates “good” versus “suspect”
generalizability?
5. Discussion. In this section you are to take each of the three criterion developed in
your methods section (sampling, reliability and generalizability) and make a
judgment as to whether or not the Dunbar et al. article meets or fails to meet the
standard of “good” research you have articulated. Make specific references to the
Dunbar et al. article. Use the same three subheadings (sections), in the same order as
the methods section.
6. Conclusion. Give a brief conclusion.
Reference List. Identify all references used/cited in the paper, including the article you are
analyzing. There is no set number of references required for this assignment. The common
number of references for a paper of this nature ranges from eight to ten so
