Use the following essay topics to think through the issue/text to some degree before approaching secondary material so that you can clearly distinguish between your thoughts and those you read later. Research is enormously useful, but I want to ensure you avoid plagiarism, so keep careful records and notes. Paraphrase, summary, and quotation all require MLA-style bracketed citations including a page reference. Most scholarly essays are available as a pdf even if you retrieve them from the internet; for those few academic sources that do not have page references, you will have to count and include paragraph numbers.
