1. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche share much in common. The both grew up in religious families and were both strongly affected by the ending of a romantic relationship. They both succeeded in living exaggeratedly authentic individual existences that broke with social conventions. And they both advanced powerful and prophetic diagnoses of the maladies affecting the modern world, as well as radical prescriptions for authentic existence. Despite their many striking commonalities, however, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche appear to offer strikingly different visions of authenticity —especially regarding the role of religious faith in an authentic life. For this essay, write a fictional conversational dialogue between Kierkegaard and Nietzsche on what an authentic existence is, and the role that faith in God, or the rejection of faith in God, plays in such an existence. Focus especially on their critiques of a “detached” objective, knowledge-based approach to living, their substitution of a more passionate existence, and the clues they provide to what “progress’ on the path to authenticity looks like. Your fictional dialogue should weave in at least three quotations from each of the philosophers, and should identify two insights that both philosophers share, as well as two strong differences.
