I want to try something different for this assignment. I want all of you to go to http://cagle.com/ and find a political cartoon that you think is interesting. You can click on the subject links, or you could click on http://cagle.com/politicalcartoons/ to find the latest political cartoons for the day.

Once you find your cartoon, I want you to try to figure out what the content of the cartoon could be. Next, and perhaps most importantly, I want you to tell me how the cartoonist communicates that content. Try to think of the iconography and other forms of symbolism that the cartoonist may be using to communicate their message. In your thesis statement, briefly explain how the visual aspects of the cartoon (form), lead to the meaning (content). Avoid arguing about the content of the cartoon! Concentrate on the visual aspects instead.

Copy and paste the link for the cartoon into your post so that the other students can respond to your choice (be sure to open the cartoon in a separate window so that the proper url is displayed). You can also copy the picture and attach it to your post. Sometimes the second method works better!

Some of you may be wondering, “I thought we were studying art, not cartoons… man this teacher is dumb.” Well, hold up on the judgments for just a second, there is a method to my madness, that will hopefully be apparent when you complete the assignment.
Be sure to follow the directions for the discussion boards. Your first post should be three paragraphs. If you find that you want to say that the content of the cartoon is obvious, pick a different, more challenging cartoon that lends itself to many interpretations.
