Objective:

This assignment provides students with the opportunity to develop a BMP siting plan that will maximize multiple benefits for specific urban areas under consideration.

Description:

Many cities recognize the potential of Low Impact Development (LID) and green infrastructure in managing and mitigating urban stormwater runoff (e.g. nutrient load), yet most lack systematic strategies to identify an optimal location where the runoff quantity and quality goals are achieved while other ecological benefits such as shade, heat-island mitigation, noise abatement and recreational value are maximized.

Find a city that could benefit from incorporating LID into its management plan. Discuss how LID can be incorporated within this city that will not only aid in filtering stormwater runoff, but will also contribute to the local quality of life. Looking beyond stormwater management, how will local residents benefit from having the LID BMPs in their neighborhoods? Where will these BMPs be installed? Since the conventional stormwater management system is ‘efficient,’ how will the new BMPs be promoted? Who will sponsor the installation of these new BMPs?

The US EPA’s Handbook for Developing Watershed Plans provides a generalized outline for planning and implementation of watershed management. The handbook organizes the watershed planning process into the following major steps:

Build partnerships
Characterize the watershed to identify problems
Set goals and identify solutions
Design an implementation program
Implement the watershed plan
Measure progress and make adjustments
This can be used as a guide to help describe how your plan will be developed, implemented and monitored.

Purpose:

This assignment is designed for students to determine how location-based watershed management is site specific. It will emphasize the importance of location-based planning, spatial analysis and community-based involvement. Students will need to understand the concepts discussed thus far and discuss how the sustainability strategies, tools, techniques and methods can be integrated into a management strategy that will maximize benefits demanded within a city.

Grading Criteria:

The assignment will be graded on content, quality, and completeness. Please check the rubrics for Assignment 2.

The paper should be 3-4 pages (Arial 11pt., 1.5 spaced) and include complete references (not included in 3-4 pages)
