Recidivism
The “success” of a probation or parole system is usually understood in terms of recidivism. A recidivist is a person who, after release from custody for having committed a crime, is not rehabilitated. Instead, he or she falls back or relapses into former behavior patterns and commits more crimes. Based on readings in your textbook and researching your state’s Department of Corrections Web site:
What criterion is used to determine whether a community-based program is effective?
How is the community involved in evaluating whether the program is effectively meeting its goals?
Which specific strategies have been implemented to decrease recidivism rates?
