Post colonial Africa faced many challenges and problems to fulfil the promises of independence;
unity and prosperity. They opted for different paths of development (capitalist, populist, socialist
avenues, etc.) They had also a plan of transforming territorial nationalism into political nationalism
to coax numerous ethnic groups and communities into a nation-state. They also adopted foreign
policy doctrine which would allow them not only to survive in international system but also achieve
the projected developmental goals

heterogeneous country artificially carved into a coherent political nation? What were the key
policies to deal with centrifugal forces and regional and religious grievances and their
consequences?
3) Foreign Policy- What were the underlining rationales of African foreign policy? Explain the
foreign policy goals of the post-colonial state with a particular emphasis on the relationship
with former colonial power. What have been the nature of these relations? mutually
beneficial/cooperative or conflictual?
