Essay Guidelines
From your syllabus: Your term paper is where you will apply the tools we
have developed over the course of the semester, drawing on your research
questions and thesis you will examine a site of study and how it is an
example of the larger theoretical argument youre making. Your site of
analysis can range from being an advertising campaign, a film, media
coverage of an event, etc. the purpose of the case study is to provide you
with a specific example that you can refer to when youre making a broader
argument.
Unlike other essays that youve done in your degree this is a research paper,
you are expected to conduct research, using a clear methodology that will
generate data for you to discuss. In a sense your paper will be a
presentation of the data that youve collected from your case study. You will
be using this data to prove your thesis and use scholarly sources to
substantiate how your findings line up with current academic research that
examines similar or parallel problematics.
Your essay should be approximately 15-20 pages double-spaced and must
meet the following criteria:
? Properly researched, written in full sentences and use APA format
for both in-text citations as well as your bibliography.
? An introduction to the general problematic youre interested in
studying that draws on the appropriate theoretical and
scholarly sources to contextualize your research.
? A specific text that is an example of the larger problematic
youve identified in your introduction that you will examine and use
as evidence to support your arguments.
? Clear evidence through a brief explanation of methodology,
supported by appropriate references, that details the approach
taken to data collection and analysis. Be specific and provide
details!
? At MINIMUM ten scholarly sources that will help to provide both a
theoretical framework as well as substantiate your analysis by
linking it to existing research in the field youve chosen.

A couple of notes:
1. While I dont object to the use of headings in an essay you should use
them sparingly and your sections should flow into one another
naturally. Do not use headings in lieu of ensuring that your essay reads
like an essay. Marks will be deducted for the overuse/overreliance of
headings.
2. Be very careful about using personal pronouns. Use it sparingly and
only to tell the reader what youre going to do/have done. Avoid we
and making generalized claims that assume you and your reader have
the same perspective.
3. While personal reflection is an important and useful genre of writing,
this is an academic research paper not your personal blog. Language
should be formal, clear and coherent, avoid jargon and clichés.
4. Make sure you are substantiating your claims with evidence and
scholarship! Just stating something without supporting it weakens
your argument.
