Racial Disparity in the Criminal Justice System-Is the racial bias in the criminal justice system inheritated from slavery.

Please use some of the references below and my topic is listed below as well. Racial disparity in the Criminal Justice system. Please use other sources as well for this research proposal. The template is included below. This is a hypothetical research proposal.

1.    1.    Briefly and clearly describe your research question/problem in a sentence or two:

How did slavery set up the model for the modern day prison system.

1.    2.    Identify the key concepts from your research question/problem above and list them below.  (Note: you may not need to use all six lines.)

Concept 1: What is the history of Slavery?
Concept 2: What is the history of Prison?
Concept 3: What is Jim Crow?
Concept 4: Why is there a racial disparity in sentencing?
Concept 5: How does the prison system in the beginning compare to present day?
Concept 6: How does the public view prison and how do they relate it to race?

1.    3.    Brainstorm some alternative keywords which might also be used to describe your key concepts listed above.  These may include broader, narrower, or related terms (synonyms).  Copy each of your key concepts listed above on the lines below.  Then next to each key concept, list alternative keywords on a single line.

Example: Concept 1: teaching, instruction, education

Concept 1: Slavery, Enslavement, Feudalism
Concept 2: Prison, Confinement, Penitentiary, Penal Institution, Reformatory
Concept 3: Racial, Ethnicity, Ancestral, Genetic
Concept 4: Justice, Reparation, Legality, Correction
Concept 5: History, Past, Ancient Times, Yesteryear
Concept 6: Society, Humanity, Community, Civilization, Social Order

1.    4.    Use the keywords you brainstormed in Section 3 to construct at least two keyword search statements using Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT).

Example: (“learning disab*” or “learning disorder*”) and (teach* or educat* or instruct*)

Search 1: The New Jim Crow
Search 2: Racial Disparity in Sentencing
Search 3: Class Divide
Search 4: Jim Crow History

Keyword Search Tips
“OR” connects synonyms, “AND” connects separate concepts,” NOT” excludes concepts••
Parentheses ( ) group together synonyms••
*  wildcard at the end of the root of a word (i.e. disab*) will find word variations••

1.    5.    List the databases and other resources that you intend to search.  (Consult the UI&U Library’s Databases page at http://www.myunion.edu/library/general_recommended.html.)
2.
3.    Google Scholar, Bibliographies, Union Library, TED Talks, Books, Opposingviews.com, Documentaries, edutube.org
4.

1.    6.    List five references that you found on your topic using an appropriate citation format (i.e. APA, MLA, Chicago) and where you found them (i.e. Academic Search Premier, PsycINFO, Google).
2.

1.    7.    Write a brief paragraph about your search process.  (i.e. What did you learn from this process?  What database produced the best search results?  Were you surprised by your search results?  What keyword search statement produced the best search results?  Did you need to refine your search by broadening it or narrowing it, and if so, how?)

I intend on searching the Union Library and utilizing Google Scholar. I have identified a book on the topic I wish to research and I will look at all the sources on the web that have cited this particular book in order to identify more possible literature that I can use. I will also be watching TED talks so that I can identify additional authors that have publications on similar topics. I will also be utilizing the oppossingviews.com website.

Hypothetical Research Proposal
For the next four weeks you will work on a Hypothetical Research Proposal. You can use the template above, or you can use one that you find in your search of granting agencies in your field. You will need to cover the following:
•    An Introduction to your project, which includes your research question
•    A Literature Review on the topic (this can be the literature review you wrote in Elements of Scholarship, though you may need to tailor it to this assignment)
•    The Purpose—What are you going to do? Given the existing literature, what is your project going to contribute to the literature?
•    The Theoretical framework you are using
•    The Methods you will be using, both for collecting and analyzing the data
•    How you will address Reliability and Validity
•    How you will address Ethical issues related to your project
•    The Social Relevance of your project
Have some fun with this. Because it is hypothetical, you can propose something grander than you could pull off with a Master’s thesis. You can also be optimistic about the resources you will have access to. However, you might keep in mind the expenses of doing your project, as if you were actually to apply for funding, you would need a realistic budget. I’m not asking you to estimate expenses—that is a major project in itself!
The proposal should be about 5-7 pages single-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
