Prompt: In his essay “Walking,” Henry David Thoreau offers the following assessment of literature;

“In literature it is only the wild that attracts us. Dullness is but another name for tameness. It is uncivilized free and wild thinking in Hamlet and the ILiad, in all scriptures and mythologies and not feared in scriptures and mythologies, not feared in School, that delights us.”

Choose two major works (novels or plays) that you may have initially have thought were conventional and tame but that you now value for their “uncivilized free and wild thinking.”

Two major pieces of work I have decided to include are:
Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Write an essay in which you explain what constitutes its “uncivilized free and wild thinking.” and how this thinking is central to the value of these works as a whole. Support your ideas with specific references to the work you choose. Please integrate information from (3) outside resources to support your response. Two of three sources can be other literature that you deem relevant to the thesis statement of your two major chosen works. The other(s) could be literary criticism.

Basically you are analyzing two choices of literature(novels/plays) from the standpoint of the prompt above on “uncivilized free and wild thinking,” and using evidence (quoting text and making inferences), as well as using three additional sources of supporting evidence from research( it could be comparable literature or work of scholarship) to further ideas from claim – the thesis statement.

The paper will follow the traditional format: introduction, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion, and work cited page – MLA.
