2. Go back to the text and highlight its major points.

3. Write a draft of the summary outlining the major (important) points of the reading.

4. Remember that the purpose of summarizing is to convey the author’s message in your own words without distorting it. Make sure not to include any of your own interpretations in the summary.

5. Remember that only terms / phrases that are absolutely necessary for your summary and cannot be paraphrased can be quoted directly.

6. Revise your draft and make the necessary changes.

Your grade will be calculated as following:
1. Summary – content quality: the summary demonstrates the student’s full comprehension of the text and presents all the main points of the original text.
2. Summary – accuracy: the summary accurately conveys the meaning of the original text without distorting the facts and / or adding information that is not in the text.
3. Summary – language: the student uses his / her own words and statements to convey the meaning of the original text. Writing is clear, concise and coherent. Grammar errors are barely present and do not interfere with the reader’s ability to understand student’s writing.
