Project description
Read the Case, When Strategies Collide – Macy’s and Martha Stewart, found in the Document Sharing Tab.
After you have read the case, make some notes on the questions at the end of the case.
Choose one of the two major parties in the case, either Macy’s or Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Analyze the situation, the business strategies, and the company strengths and weaknesses. Define the strategic problem (not the immediate situation of what to do about the lawsuit), and propose at least 2 solutions for the company’s strategy moving forward. Use the format recommended in the syllabus for case analysis. In other words, if you were the CEO or board of directors for Macy’s (or Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia), what should your future strategy look like?
Generally cases follow this format: (1) a summary of the relevant situation in the case, (2) Internal analysis of the firm, including current corporate and business-level strategies, (3) external analysis, (4) SWOT analysis culminating in identification of a problem (which may be in fact an opportunity), (5) proposal of 2 or more alternative courses of action that will help solve the problem or exploit the opportunity, (6) evaluation of all alternatives, (7) recommendation of best alternative and (8) implementation issues that need to be considered.
