Weeks 7 and 8: Question #2

In Death Work, I refer to a rookie’s first professional encounter with death as “a fundamental rite of passage.” In the context of the Formative-Symbolic Paradigm and survivor psychology, briefly describe the rookie’s first experience with death, its effects, and how he or she might deal with it. Why this a difficult experience? What is it about death that engenders such universal anxiety and resistance? How are the death encounters of Patrol Sergeants, Crime Scene Detectives, and Homicide Detectives different from that of the Rookie, and why?
